White Blood Count Update

For those of you that have been following my saga with my white blood count and how low it is I finally have an update. First, if you don’t know what I’m talking about you can go here to get caught up on what I’ve been dealing with. 🙂

After I got off all the supplements like my hematologist suggested (and I wrote about in the above post) my counts were still low. Again, it was the granules that they are most worried about. Back in March, even after getting off the supplements, he wanted to see me again in 2 months and check my blood again. About the only thing I was sill ‘on’ was Flonase for my allergies, but I read that sometimes that can affect immunity so I took myself off of that too. Thankfully I found a natural alternative made locally, and it works well. I thought for sure that that was what was causing all my problems and I really expected my numbers to be in the normal range.

Well today was the next blood draw after a two month wait, and after I had been off the Flonase for about 1 1/2 months. They took all my vitals, my weight (I lost 4 pounds since my last visit 😀 ) and drew two vials of blood, then we waited about 30 minutes before the doctor came in. But the doctor is really nice and thorough so we didn’t mind (too much 😉 ). He came in the room and said that my counts were still exactly the same, no change. I wasn’t sure if I was happy or sad about that. My doctor said enough is enough, I’m just a person with a low white blood count and I shouldn’t worry about it. He explained a couple of other things it ‘could’ be, though they are a long shot. And I’m not showing any other symptoms of anything else, so he doubts it’s even those. If I get a fever of 101, or a continually fever over 100.5 I’m suppose to go get another CBC done so he can confirm what he thinks is going on. If I’m just a person with a low wbc count, or like he likes to say, I have very efficient blood, I don’t need as many white blood cells to stay healthy, ;). Then when I’m sick, like with a fever, my white blood count should rise a bit because my body is making more white blood cells to attack the virus. So if I get sick he would like me to get my blood drawn to make sure. If I get sick, I’ll make sure I get that done. But that is exactly what happened last year when all of this started. My wbc was high (for me) and I got a real bad sinus infection. Now that I’m feeling fine my count is ‘low’, because my body doesn’t need as many white blood cells to fight anything.

All in all it was a good appointment and I’m glad that its over. He said I could have my blood drawn again in 6 months if I wanted, I haven’t decided yet about that. But he did say to go back on anything I want, supplements and such, and not to worry about my wbc at all. Just live normally and put it aside. That is exactly what I’m going to do. I was so thankful that Paul had the day off and could go with me. Then the rest of the day we relaxed at home and watched some movies. It was a nice end to the day. So that is the update and hopefully the end of my wbc updates. Thanks to all of you who prayed for me, it really means a lot.

  1. What good news JoAnn. I will keep praying for you of course but it does sound like you have a “normal” low blood count. If that “exhaustion” returns, however, please make sure you see the doctor right away and not let it go. Love, Auntie Ella

  2. Wonderful news, my efficient friend! 🙂 Now you’re really ready for summer! It sounds like last week was a lot of fun.

    Enjoy your weekend!
